Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid surgery, is a facial plastic surgery procedure designed to improve sagging skin of the upper eyelids and bags beneath the lower eyelids. Surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. Blepharoplasty restores a more youthful appearance to the eye area and, in extreme cases, can even improve vision when excess upper eyelid skin interferes with the line of sight.

Healthy individuals who are looking to improve the appearance of sagging upper eyelid skin or puffy under-eye bags may be candidates for eyelid surgery. For a more complete facial rejuvenation, the surgery can be combined with a browlift or facelift. A patient consultation with Dr. Kontis is the best way to determine if eyelid surgery is right for you.

Blepharoplasty, which typically takes one to three hours to complete, may be performed with either local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. Incisions are small and strategically placed so that the resulting scars are undetectable. For an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision may be made within the crease of the upper eyelid. For a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision may be made just below the lashes of the lower eyelid or on the inside of the lower eyelid. Working through the incisions, Dr. Kontis will remove excess fatty tissue and trim sagging skin and muscle as necessary before closing the incisions with very fine sutures.

Once the surgery is complete, a bandage may be temporarily applied to the eyelids. The head should be kept elevated during the first few days to help minimize bruising and swelling. Cold compresses may also be used. Patients may experience some discomfort after their eyelid surgery which can be alleviated with prescription pain medication. Other sensations including dryness, itching, burning, or tearing of the eyes, increased sensitivity to light, or blurred or double vision may occur during the first week. Bruising should resolve after two to four weeks. In most cases, work and other normal activities can be resumed within seven to ten days after undergoing eyelid surgery, though more strenuous activities will need to be delayed for at least three weeks.

Blepharoplasty can restore a more youthful and lively appearance to tired or aged-looking eyes.
