I have very large ears for a female and would like to have corrective surgery to make them smaller and also to have them closer to my head. I am curious as to what type of anesthesia is used for otoplasty and also what it the recovery time?
We often require general anesthesia for children undergoing otoplasty surgery, but in most adults, this surgery can be performed under local or sedation anesthesia. This is not a painful surgery, and recovery is usually about 1 week.
I have this one depressed area in my nose since my nose job. What's the best way to correct this? Should a graft be used or maybe fillers?
It is important to know how far out you are from surgery. If your surgery was performed less than 6-12 months ago, you should probably wait until the residual edema subsides. Your surgeon should decide whether or not you need revision surgery or if a small amount of filler can be used to camouflage the depression.
We are allowing our 12 year old son to have otoplasty (he is very self conscious about his ears). I'd like to time the procedure so that is has little to no interruption to school or sports. How long is the recovery period? When would he be able to play sports again (soccer and basketball).
It is wonderful that you are sensitive to the needs of your son. Teasing can be terrible in school for children with prominent ears, and often we suggest surgery just before the child enters first grade. The surgery is generally performed as an outpatient and I would recommend that he not play sports for about 2 weeks postoperatively. Otoplasty patients are always our most grateful patients!
I have very bad facial acne scars. I hate looking like this and it seems to look even worse every year. I am Mexican and have darker skin. Is there a skin resurfacing procedure that I can have that won’t change my skin color but will get rid of some of the pitting on my face?
You should look into fractional CO2 laser resurfacing. This is ideal for your skin type and probably the best treatment you can do for acne scarring.
I’ve heard that injectables can be used as non-surgical versions of certain procedures, like a facelift, eyelid lift, nose job, etc. How effective are these?
No filler can replace surgery, but we can achieve some dramatic effects by using injectables. For example, we can use filler to camouflage nasal irregularities, fill in around the jowls, left the cheeks, lift the brows, augment the chin and fill in around the lower lid bags. We can use neurotoxins to lift the nasal tip, lift the brows, improve the corners of the mouth, and widen the eyes.
What is Radiesse? What is it best used to treat and how long do results last?
Radiesse is a dermal filler. It is used much like Restylane and Juvederm, but is a thicker produce made of synthetic bone: calcium hydroxylapatite. While Restylane and Juvederm are clear gels, Radiesse is a white paste. It is used similarly to lift deep folds and wrinkles on the face and can last up to a year, or so. Because of its thick quality, I enjoy using it to improve deep folds and to elevate the corners of the mouth in people with heavy, think skin; however, it is not used to augment the lips.
I would like to get injectable fillers in my face. I would like to plump up both my lips and my nasolabial folds which have gotten quite pronounced. I would like hyaluronic acid because the reports that I read indicate it is longer lasting than collagen. Is hyaluronic acid appropriate for both areas?
Hyaluronic Acid (Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm) is the perfect choice for you. It can augment the lips as well as the cheek folds.
After I get injectable fillers in my face, how should I take care of this area afterwards? Do I use antibiotic creams or any special lotions? Do you provide these or do I have to buy them?
The post treatment care for fillers is usually just ice and no exercise for the day (Except Sculptra, which requires massage of the area for several days.) It is highly unlikely to get an infection of the injection sites, so we do not suggest applying antibiotic ointments.
I will be having a facelift in the next week, and plan on seeing my hairdresser a few days after. Should I inform her that I have just had a facelift and to be careful around my hairline?
Absolutely let your hairdresser know. I do not allow my facelift patients to have any hair treatments until about 3 weeks after surgery (aside from washing, of course!)
I am quite interested in cheek implant surgery. I have wanted more pronounced cheekbones for several years but for me that was only a pipe dream. Now I have noticed some sagging in my cheeks, perhaps even the formation of jowls. Would the cheek lift alleviate these skin issues?
You have many options! Years ago, all we could offer you was a cheek implant. Now, we can fill your cheeks with filler—Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm or Radiesse. Or, you could have several Sculptra treatments which can also help contour your cheeks. If you want a more permanent fix, consider a midface lift or even cheek implants. It might be nice to try a filler first to see if you like the way it looks before committing to a surgery.
