Chemical Peels in Baltimore, MD

Board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Theda C. Kontis offers chemical peels to the residents of Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas.

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that removes the worn top layers of the dermis to reveal the younger, fresher-looking skin underneath. Not only is the complexion healthier, but pigmentation irregularities, acne scars, and facial lines can be removed. Patients enjoy toned, firm skin and a healthy, more youthful appearance.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel uses one of three options: alphahydroxy acid, trichloroacetic acid, or phenol.

  • Alphahydroxy acid (AHA). This is the mildest form of chemical peel, removing the superficial layers. It can use glycolic, lactic, or fruit acid to reveal the soft, radiant skin underneath, while treating small wrinkles and blemishes.
  • Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). This is a medium-strength procedure to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and irregularities in pigmentation. A TCA peel may be done with an anesthetic solution.
  • Phenol peel. This is the strongest chemical peel option, used to treat deeper skin issues that can include pre-cancerous skin growths and pronounced wrinkles. The procedure may be done under sedation if necessary, with an anesthetic added to the chemical peel solution.

The milder types of chemical peels can be done by a medical aesthetician, while stronger peels are done by Dr. Kontis in the procedure room. Repeat treatments may be required with milder peels.

What is recovery from a chemical peel like?

During recovery some swelling, flaking, redness, dryness, and scabbing of the skin may be experienced, depending on the depth of the peel. Although new skin growth is complete within a week, in about six weeks new collagen will form, and the final results can be seen. Most patients can resume normal activities shortly after a mild peel, while a phenol peel may require several weeks of recovery.

Board certified in both Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Theda C.
