The facelift, also referred to as rhytidectomy, is a facial plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the signs of aging in the lower face. Unlike newer, less-invasive techniques that address surface wrinkles alone, the facelift remains the best treatment for sagging skin including deep folds of the lower face, sagging cheeks, jowls, and a "turkey waddle" neck.
Healthy individuals who are looking to improve sagging skin in the lower face and neck may be good candidates for a facelift. For patients looking to improve just the cheek or neck areas, Dr. Kontis can perform a minimized version of the facelift in the form of a cheeklift or necklift. For a complete facial rejuvenation, additional procedures like the browlift or eyelid surgery can be performed at the same time. A patient consultation with Dr. Kontis is the best way to determine if a facelift is right for you.
The facelift surgery, which typically lasts several hours in length, is often performed with either local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. The incision may begin in the hairline at about the temples and extend downward in a natural line around the earlobe and behind the ear. The underlying muscles are tightened, excess fat is removed, and the skin is then re-draped. An additional small incision may be made just under the chin to address loose skin of the neck.
On completion of the surgery, the head may be loosely wrapped with a bandage which will remain in place for one to five days. The face may appear puffy, pale and bruised during the first few days after surgery, and it´s best to keep the head elevated as much as possible during this time. The bruising should resolve after about two to four weeks. Some numbness of the skin can also occur which may last anywhere from several weeks to several months. Patients may experience some minor discomfort after their facelift which can be alleviated with prescription pain medication. In most cases, work and other normal activities can be resumed within ten to fourteen days after undergoing a facelift, though more strenuous activities will need to be delayed for two or more weeks. Patients will also need to limit their sun exposure for several months.
The facelift is one of the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures performed today. It can restore a more youthful facial appearance which in turn can help you to feel younger as well.
