As we age, the bony support of the upper lip is lost, and so the skin of the upper lip appears to elongate, and the pink upper lip becomes smaller. One treatment to restore the youthful proportions of the upper lip is called the "lip lift." This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is placed under the nose in the natural crease. A portion of upper lip skin is removed and the incision closed, which acts to enlarge the pink lip and shorten the amount of upper lip skin. The incision usually heals as a barely visible scar.
