Liposuction of the neck restores the youthful jawline, but may not be appropriate for all patients. Neck liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia and involves using a small liposuction cannula to aspirate fat from the neck. When used as an isolated procedure, it is important that the neck skin have enough elasticity to "snap back" to the normal neck contour. Often neck liposuction is used in younger patients who just have a small fat collection under the chin. If there is not enough elasticity to the skin, it may not re-drape smoothly. In these cases, skin excision would be necessary. A small amount of skin can be removed from behind the ears during neck liposuction; however, when large amounts of skin and fat must be removed, it is more advisable to consider a lower face and neck lift (facelift).
