On occasion, certain injectable fillers can be used to modify the nose. Some people refer to this technique as the non-surgical rhinoplasty. Fillers can be injected safely into the nose to camouflage minor irregularities, like a small dorsal hump, or a depressed sidewall. We at the Facial Plastic Surgi-Center in Boston can even use Botox to elevate the nasal tip!
Cosmetic rhinoplasty changes the appearance of the nose. There is not one surgery for everyone; each rhinoplasty surgery must be specifically tailored to the nasal deformity and the desires of the patient. Often we use computer imaging to help display the potential surgical results that can be achieved which helps to give the patient realistic expectations. This is a surgery which takes several hours to perform, and about one week to recover.
On occasion, rhinoplasty is combined with certain procedures to improve breathing, like straightening the septum.Contrary to what most people think, the nose is not packed with 'yards of packing" anymore. Plastic splints with breathing channels are placed in the nose to support the straightened septum. Usually patients can breathe through the nose postoperatively; it feels like breathing when they have a bad cold. The splints are removed at the one week postoperative visit. Patients often return to work once the splints are removed.
Because the nose stands out from the face, it receives direct rays from this sun. Unfortunately, this sun exposure can lead to the development of skin cancers. We frequently work with specialized dermatologic surgeons (Mohs surgeons) who remove the skin cancers by checking the tumor extent microscopically to ensure complete tumor removal. The patients then follow up in our office the same or following day for surgical reconstruction of the Mohs defects. These defects can range from small areas of skin loss to very large defects requiring complete nasal reconstruction.
