Otoplasty, also referred to as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure which corrects prominent or distorted ears. Otoplasty can be performed following the full developmental growth of the ears, which is around the age of five. It can be particularly beneficial when performed on children as even a mild deformity of the ears can lead to teasing amongst one´s peers. Adult patients often undergo otoplasty in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery procedures.
Healthy individuals seeking an improvement in the appearance of large or distorted ears may be candidates for otoplasty. A consultation with Dr. Kontis is the best way to determine if otoplasty is right for you.
Otoplasty surgery usually takes between two and three hours to complete. Different anesthesia is used depending on the individua´s age. Younger patients are often given general anesthesia for the surgery, while older children and adults are typically given local anesthesia with sedation. The small incision for this procedure is made behind the ears, leaving a slight scar that will fade in time. Once the incision is made, the cartilage is exposed and sculpted to the desired shape. Dr. Kontis can reshape the ears, reduce them in size, or "pin back" the ears. Sutures may be used to maintain the new shape and, in other cases, it may be necessary to remove a piece of cartilage. In most cases, surgery is performed on both ears in order to achieve symmetry, even if only one ear is protruding.
After surgery, there may be some throbbing or aching of the ears. The head is usually wrapped in a bandage which will be replaced in a few days with a lighter head dressing. There may also be some numbness and redness in the ears. Within five to seven days after surgery, most normal activity can resume. However, any activity that may involve contact with the ears, as well as strenuous activity, should be avoided for one to two months.
Individuals who are embarrassed by large or distorted ears can benefit greatly from otoplasty. The surgery can provide an improved appearance as well as an increase in self confidence.
