Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision Rhinoplasty, also referred as a secondary or tertiary rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure which can repair problems with the appearance and/or function of the nose resulting from a prior rhinoplasty procedure. Older rhinoplasty techniques often involved the removal of excessive cartilage which could result in impaired nasal function and nasal deformities. Revision rhinoplasty can address these problems.

Healthy individuals who are looking to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose after a previous rhinoplasty surgery may be candidates for revision rhinoplasty. It´s not uncommon for patients to have undergone several rhinoplasty surgeries which can result in both physical and emotional issues for the patient. Furthermore, revision rhinoplasty is one of the most complex plastic surgery procedures to perform. Dr. Kontis brings both technical skill and compassion to each revision rhinoplasty procedure.

Revision rhinoplasty is often performed using an open technique in which a small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils. This allows for a better view of and easier access to the interior of the nose, which can be particularly beneficial in cases involving excess scar tissue. In cases involving lost structures, cartilage grafts may be necessary. These grafts often involve cartilage taken from the nasal septum, the ear or, in more severe cases, the rib. Revision rhinoplasty may be performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. The surgery generally takes two or more hours to complete.

The recovery is often less extensive after a revision rhinoplasty procedures than after a primary rhinoplasty. There is usually less bruising, swelling and pain. While the bruising will fade within about ten days, the swelling may take several months to dissipate. Normal activity may be resumed after about one week.
