Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nasal contouring, is a facial plastic surgery procedure which can reshape the nose and alleviate some breathing problems. During surgery, Dr. Kontis can increase or decrease the overall size of the nose, remove a hump, refine the tip, narrow the span of the nostrils, or make a change in the angle between the nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the nose for simple aesthetic purposes but it may also be used to correct birth defects, traumatic injury and some breathing problems.
Healthy individuals who are looking to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose may be candidates for rhinoplasty. In most cases, surgery is best postponed on younger patients until the nose has completed its growth. A patient consultation with Dr. Kontis is the best way to determine if rhinoplasty is right for you.
Rhinoplasty surgery is most often performed with either local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. Most patients can expect the surgery to last approximately one to two hours. There are two techniques commonly used when making the incisions for rhinoplasty. For the closed technique, all incisions are made on the inside of the nose, resulting in no visible scarring. For the open technique, a small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils, resulting in a small scar that typically fades with time to become virtually undetectable. The technique that is right for you will depend on your individual case. Working through the incisions, Dr. Kontis will sculpt the nose to the desired new shape.
On completion of the surgery, a splint will be applied to the nose. This may remain in place for about one to two weeks. It is common for the face to appear puffy during the first few days after surgery, and some swelling and bruising may be apparent around the eyes. Patients may experience a slight headache at first, as well as other discomfort which can be alleviated with prescription pain medication. The stitches are usually removed one to two weeks after surgery. While the majority of noticeable swelling will clear up within about two weeks, patients should be aware that minor, unnoticeable swelling can last for up to a year. The final results of surgery may not be apparent until all of the swelling is resolved. In most cases, work and other normal activities can be resumed after one to two weeks, though more strenuous activities will need to be delayed for at least two to three weeks.
Most rhinoplasty patients are very happy with the appearance and function of their nose after surgery. Rhinoplasty can improve the nasal appearance while also creating better balance among the facial features. For individuals who are self-conscious about their nose, rhinoplasty can provide a dramatic improvement in self confidence.
