Board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Theda C. Kontis offers eyelid surgery to the residents of Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of the most common types of surgery performed. As you age, the beauty of your eyes and their ability to communicate can become obscured as the skin around the eyes wrinkles and droops. Exposure to sun, genetics, and other factors can worsen the process. Sagging skin around the eyes and puffy under-eye bags can age your face and give you a sad, tired appearance. In extreme cases, excess upper skin can even interfere with your line of sight. Eyelid surgery restores and lifts the skin so that your eyes are once more a vibrant, outstanding facial feature. Dr. Kontis often combines eyelid surgery with a facelift or brow lift for complete facial rejuvenation.

How is eyelid surgery done?

Patients can have eyelid surgery on either the upper or lower eyelids or both. Upper eyelid surgery involves an incision along the natural lines and creases of your eyelids. Dr. Kontis works through these incisions to remove excess fatty tissue. Sagging skin and muscle is trimmed before the incision is closed. Lower eyelid surgery is generally done from the inside, or the transconjunctival approach. This method allows the fatty deposits under the eye to be contoured without an incision, which lessens scarring.

What is recovery from eyelid surgery like?

Eyelid surgery can take from 1 to 2 hours. Once the surgery is complete, fine sutures are used to close the incisions and a temporary bandage is applied. Cold compresses and elevating the head can help reduce bruising. Discomfort is generally minor and can be managed with prescription pain medication. During the first week, some patients experience dryness, burning, itching, sensitivity to light and blurred or double vision, but these issues should resolve within a few weeks. Recovery time is minimal, and most patients are able to resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days after surgery.
