Many people choose facelift surgery as a way to refresh their look and restore youth and vigor to the face. Over the years, aging, weather, sun, stress, and genetics all take a toll on your face. The skin develops wrinkles and begins to sag, and the fatty tissue under the skin weakens and deflates, giving you an old, tired, and unhappy appearance. Unattractive features such as a “turkey waddle” neck and sagging jowls are often present. A facelift can restore the firm, youthful look of the skin on your face, making you appear younger, healthier, and happier. While non-invasive surface treatments can do much to reduce lines and wrinkles, the surgical facelift is the best way to treat deep facial wrinkles and loose, saggy skin on the face and neck. Eyelid surgery and a brow lift may be done at the same time for a total facial rejuvenation.
What is a facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a plastic surgery procedure that reduces signs of aging from the lower face. The surgery literally lifts the muscles and saggy skin of the lower face and neck, pulling them taut and smoothing out wrinkles and deep lines. The procedure is often done in conjunction with liposuction and fat transplants to restore a round, youthful look. A mini facelift may be performed on the neck and/or cheeks.
How is facelift surgery performed?
The procedure is done under general anesthesia or sedation with local anesthesia. An incision is made at the temples on either side, extending in a line behind the ear around the earlobe. An incision also may be made under the chin to remove sagging skin on the neck. Muscles underneath are tightened, fat is extracted, and the skin is redraped over the area. Excess skin is removed, and the incision is stitched. Liposuction or fat injections can be used in conjunction with the surgery to help restore a smooth, rounded facial appearance.
What is recovery from facelift surgery like?
The surgery area may be wrapped with a dressing for several days. It is recommended to keep the head elevated to promote healing. Some bruising and puffiness are normal, but this should subside after two or three weeks. Any minor discomfort can be managed with pain medication. Occasionally there is some numbness in the skin, which can last up to several months. Normal activities can generally be resumed within 10 to 14 days, although strenuous activity should be limited for a time. Sun should be avoided for several months while healing. Most patients heal completely with minimal scarring.
Facelift surgery is a common procedure and a popular way to restore a younger appearance to the face. A facelift can help you look and feel refreshed and more youthful and increase your sense of self-esteem and attractiveness.
