Kybella™ in Baltimore, MD
Dr. Papel and Dr. Kontis are excited to be one of the first and only practices to provide Kybella™ injections for patients in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Annapolis, and the surrounding areas of Maryland.
What is Kybella™? How does it work?
Kybella™ is a refined version of a substance called deoxycholic acid, which is naturally produced by your body. Deoxycholic acid’s primary role is assisting with fat absorption. It destroys fat cells wherever it is injected, causing them to be absorbed by the body. This makes Kybella™ an innovative and ideal new way for patients to gain some of the benefits of liposuction for a double chin without surgery. Prior to approval in May of 2015 by the Food and Drug Administration, Kybella™ was the subject of medical trials that included more than 1,000 individuals. The results showed that eight out of ten people who received Kybella™ had a loss of chin fat.
Why choose Kybella™?
Most people who have a double chin feel self-conscious about the fullness. To make matters worse, extra fat in this region may not go away with diet and exercise. A lot of individuals who struggle with double chins avoid liposuction for their problem because they worry about the costs, downtime, and invasiveness. Fortunately, Kybella™ offers a cutting-edge new way to solve double chins without these obstacles.
How many treatments are required? What should I expect?
The number of injections required depends on the needs and goals of each patient. Dr. Papel and Dr. Kontis estimate that 12 to 20 small injections per visit will be sufficient for the majority of patients with two to three visits needed for optimal results. These appointments will be one month apart on average.
Patients with advanced cases of double chin may require upwards of 50 injections per visit with subsequent appointments every few weeks. One treatment with Kybella™ takes roughly 15 minutes, and according to the findings of clinical studies, results are expected after a few procedures. Therefore, the final results may take several months to appear.
Kybella™ isn’t approved for sagging skin, but will it still help?
Because Kybella™ was only designed to address fat accumulation under the chin, the drug is not expected to have any benefits for sagging skin. That said, some participants in the Kybella™ clinical trials reported minor tightening. The office of Dr. Papel and Dr. Kontis offers skin tightening treatments for their patients using Viora™ and Infini® (radiofrequency devices).
Can Kybella™ melt fat from other parts of the body?
So far, Kybella™ has only gained FDA approval for eliminating fat deposits under the chin. It is not yet known if the drug will be found beneficial for fat deposits on the hips or upper arms. Some research suggests that Kybella™ might help with minor subcutaneous fat accumulations such as lipomas, but experts are concerned about potential risks. Additional research is necessary to find out whether Kybella™ will prove acceptable for addressing these issues.
How much will Kybella™ cost? Will my health insurance cover it?
Definitive pricing for Kybella™ has not yet been released and is not expected to until it hits the market in June. However, many experts believe it will cost about the same as other injectables. That said, what patients pay for Kybella™ is determined by how much of the drug they need as well as how many visits are necessary for optimal results. This information can only be given to you accurately during your consultation appointment with Dr. Papel or Dr. Kontis.
Because Kybella™ is designed for addressing fat beneath the chin, it’s considered a purely cosmetic treatment. For this reason, health insurance will not cover any cost for the treatments. However, Dr. Papel and Dr. Kontis, of the Facial Plastic Surgicenter in Baltimore, MD, take all major credit cards and even offer financing options to help you afford the treatment you want.
At the Facial Plastic Surgicenter, we urge you to remember that everyone is different, and your comfort with our surgeons is just as important as the final price.
